A dangerous ride

I RECENTLY had a horrible experience with a ride-sharing service. After a hectic day, I booked a ride back home that was about a 40-minute commute. The driver was apparently in his 50s, and showed disturbing behaviour towards the riders.

Throughout the journey, the driver showed a reckless behaviour, taking turns rather sharply, increasing the risk of accident. Moreover, when approaching other cars, he accelerated abruptly only to brake sharply. The more alarming factor was that he frequently scrolled through social media platforms, splitting his attention between the road and his phone. He wore a hands-free device, yet his constant engagement with his mobile phone compromised his concentration. In addition, without looking at rearview mirrors, he crossed lanes while ignoring traffic lights and honking impatiently.

Many incidents must have been taking place daily, which is why there is an urgent need to ensure strict safety protocols for ride-sharing services and their drivers. There should be strict and frequent checks and penalties for drivers caught using mobiles or showing dangerous behaviour while driving. Moreover, ride-sharing services should check proper driving skills before allowing individuals to use their platforms.
