ISLAMABAD: The capital police have put in place elaborate security arrangements for Christmas, including deployment at churches and public areas.

The police said a contingent of 1,500 officials had been deployed to ensure foolproof security for the Christmas celebrations.

On the directions of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Ali Raza, the police have been put on high alert to avoid any untoward situation.

Foolproof security arrangements have been made for this occasion. Greenbelts near churches would be thoroughly searched while mobile units, Dolphin Squads and police commandos would ensure patrolling in the areas.

Additionally, police officers will be deployed at churches, markets and recreational places. Special pickets have been set up on major highways and boulevards in the capital.

Foolproof security put in place in all churches in urban and rural areas of Islamabad, says DIG

Security duties at public places, including parks, would be made more effective. Security would also be tightened at the entry and exit points of the capital.

Moreover, different police teams will closely monitor suspects, and additional forces will be deployed at public places. All police stations had been directed to prepare duty rosters and assign teams to patrol various sectors and rural areas.

Supervisory officers of the Operations Division, including zonal, circle and police stations, were asked to ensure effective patrolling in their respective areas. Special Branch officials, well-equipped policemen and female officers will also perform duties near churches and public places.

A police officer told Dawn that the capital had 245 churches located in the urban and rural areas. These churches have been divided into three categories - ‘A’ most sensitive, ‘B’ sensitive, and ‘C’ normal - on security point of view.

The main congregations are organised at churches in G-7, F-8 and Diplomatic Enclave, he said, adding diplomats attended congregations in the Diplomatic Enclave.

Police teams, including personnel from the Counter-Terrorism Department, have been deployed at churches and worship places located in I-9, H-9, Iqbal Town, G-7, G-8, G-6, F-7, and F-8

Meanwhile, DIG Syed Ali Raza held a meeting with a delegation from the Christian community and discussed security measures. He assured the delegation that the police had taken all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the Christian community and their religious events.

He said comprehensive security will be provided for congregations on the eve of Christmas.

He said the Christian community members were assured that the capital police were always available for their security and considered itself accountable for their protection. He added that all churches in Islamabad were being provided foolproof security.
