GOVERNANCE EXAMPLE

GOVERNANCE EXAMPLE: The appointment of governors, judges and military commanders was a task perfor-med by Caliph Umar himself. At the time of appointment, the selected candidates signed a four-clause appointment letter to the effect that they would not ride a high-breed horse, not wear ostentatious clothes, would not eat refined flour, and the door of their offices would never be closed. Before the appointment of a governor, all his assets were listed down officially, and, once the tenure of duty was over, any increase in assets was deposited in the treasury. Can we follow such examples?

DISCONNECT: This is with reference to the report ‘26 martyred in Quetta railway station explosion’ (Nov 10) and the editorial ‘Playing in Pakistan’ (Nov 10). The report mentioned that 26 people, including 16 security personnel, had lost their lives and 61 others had been injured in a suicide bombing. The editorial said it was time India stopped “using the security excuse and play in Pakistan”.

CRITICAL SERVICES: The District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Dadu lacks specialised staff, such as gastroen-terology consultants, and several essential services, like endoscopy. Cardiac patients are often referred to Sehwan for specia-lised care. The hospital lacks important diagnostic tools like scanners and ultrasound machines. The authorities should improve the infrastructure.

WATER CRISIS: Karachi is facing a severe water crisis these days. Many areas have received little to no water supply for more than two weeks. The authorities have neither given any satisfactory explanation for this shortage nor taken any action to resolve the issue. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) must fix the problem and restore the water supply at the earliest. It must also identify the root cause of such recurring shortages.
