LAHORE: Riffat Mukhtar, a BPS-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), has assumed the charge of office of inspector general of National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP).

Previously, he was serving as additional secretary at the interior ministry.

An official said the name of Mr Riffat was picked up by interior minister Mohsin Naqvi himself as the new IG NHMP is said to be very close to him. Mr Riffat has held various significant positions, most notably as the IG of Sindh Police.

The independent police circles believe that chances of giving the NHMP under the administrative control of the interior ministry have brightened following the posting of Mr Riffat.
