KARACHI: The prevailing cold wave in the metropolis intensified further as temperature dropped to 8.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The ongoing cold wave is brought about by a high pressure area prevailing over Afghanistan and a ‘westerly disturbance’.

The Met department’s data showed variation in minimum temperature recorded in different areas of the city — 6.5°C in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, 8°C at and around Jinnah Terminal, 8.5°C at Sharea Faisal and 9°C in Mauripur.

In Karachi, the minimum temperature is expected to range between 8°C to 10°C over the next two days, the Met Office said.

According to the Met officials, the lowest ever minimum temperature of the month of December in the city was 1.3°C, which was recorded on Dec 14, 1986.

The city’s maximum temperature was 27°C on Saturday and relative humidity was 38 per cent and 32pc in the morning and evening, respectively.

The lowest temperature in the province was recorded in Mohenjo Daro 1.5°C followed by Mithi 2.5°C and Chhor 4°C.

“Very cold wave continues to prevail over the province with night temperatures to remain 3°C to 6°C below normal in most parts of the province. Fog is likely to prevail over the districts of upper and central Sindh,” says the Met department’s advisory.
