KHYBER: An awareness session was held here in Bara on Sunday to impart knowledge to local tribesmen about their legal and constitutional rights.

The session was organised by Peace and Justice Network (PJN) in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Speakers at the session appreciated the PJN initiative and hoped that such sessions would enable locals to acquire necessary knowledge about their legal rights and properly prepare themselves to contest their case for acquisition of basic rights.

They said that importance of such awareness sessions and seminars had increased after merger of tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. They said that such sessions would also enable tribal people to equip themselves with necessary knowledge of police and justice system along with other basic laws.

They suggested to the authorities to increase the number and frequency of such useful sessions as those were of vital importance for tribal people. The participants of the session were awarded certificates at the end of the event.

POLLS: Elections to the three press clubs of Landi Kotal, Jamrud and Bara were held simultaneously on Sunday with 100 local journalists exercising their right to vote.

Aman Ali Shinwari, Sajid Ali Kukikhel and Salim Afridi were elected presidents of Landi Kotal, Jamrud and Bara press clubs, respectively.

A tough contest was witnessed in Bara where Salim Afridi defeated his rival Khadim Afridi by a margin of only two votes while Sajid Kukikhel in Jamrud and Aman Ali had easy sailing as they secured maximum votes of 19 and 13, respectively, with their rivals securing two and nine votes, respectively.

For the post of general secretaries, Munir Afridi, Mohammad Akbar and Hijrat Ali were elected from Bara, Jamrud and Landi Kotal, respectively.

Alongside local journalists, a sizeable number of political activists, tribal elders and members of civil society were also present during the daylong polling at the three press clubs.
