RAWALPINDI: In its ongoing campaign against plastic bags of less than 75 microns in shopping malls of the garrison city, the district administration on Thursday confiscated 1,754kg of plastic bags and sealed
three shops besides imposing a fine of Rs85,000 on shopkeepers.
The Punjab government has imposed a ban on use of shopping bags of less than 75 microns in June last across the province and gave time to shopping malls and traders to replace environment friendly bags.
Assistant Commissioner City Hakim Khan told Dawn that the teams would confiscate plastic bagsof less than 75 microns (polyethylene & non-woven polypropylene) from retailers of commercial areas only.
He said the Punjab government had also imposed a ban on manufacturing, sale and use of polythene/plastic bags.
He said that the awareness campaign had been launched in the district to promote the use of paper and cloth made bags in the market and bazaars.
