HARIPUR: A court marriage claimed the life of two brothers in the name of honor in Haripur city, the police said here on Saturday.

The city police quoted Wajid Khan, a resident of Kandal village, as saying that his brothers, Mohammad Azam and Fazale Raziq, were travelling in a rickshaw towards Haripur city from Saddar police station on Friday night.

“When the rickshaw was passing through the Chappar Road near a CNG station their rivals, identified as brothers Kala and Sheraz; and Junaid and Tanwaiz, also brothers, ambushed the three-wheeler, which left them critically injured,” the complainant said.

Wajid told the police that the injured were removed to the trauma centre, but the doctors pronounced them as brought dead.

The police said the reason behind the double murder was family’s honour as one of the deceased, Azam, had solemnised court marriage with the daughter of Shamraiz about a month ago, and the girl’s family was not happy with their decision.

The police said Azam was directly nominated in the FIR registered with the Saddar police station, in which he was accused him of kidnapping the girl by her family. However, they said both the sides had agreed not to engage in litigation on the condition that Azam would leave the area to settle somewhere else to avoid the confrontation. As a result, the complaint had been withdrawn and a compromise was struck.

However, Azam allegedly violated the precondition of the compromise and started visiting his home town, which provoked the rival party, leading to his and his brother’s murder.
