LAKKI MARWAT: A police official was injured when motorcyclists attacked a police party in Takht-i-Nusrati area of Karak district on Tuesday.

An official said a party of Yaqoob Khan Shaheed police station led by SHO Wajid Ali set up a checkpoint near Gango Algada area to check suspected motorcyclists and motorists.

He said two motorcyclists came close to the checkpoint, opened fire on policemen and sped away. “A cop, identified as Yasir, was injured, and was rushed to a hospital,” he said.

The official said a contingent led by district police officer Shahbaz Elahi also reached the area to hunt down the attackers. “When the suspects noticed the police were chasing them they again fired at them and later abandoned their motorcycle near Umar Din Kallay area,” the official said.

He said both the men disappeared in the nearby forest, but the law enforcers continued searching for them, resulting in an exchange of fire, which led to the arrest of one of them, identified as Farman, in injured condition.

The police official said the arrested man was a proclaimed offender and was wanted by police for attacks on law enforcers.

“The cops seized a rifle, a hand grenade and ammunition from him,” he claimed, saying efforts were underway to arrest his fleeing accomplice.

Separately, the Lakki police averted a tragedy by defusing an improvised explosive device in Khan Kallay area on Tuesday.

An official said a party of Tajori police station was sent to the rural locality when DPO Mohammad Jawad Ishaq was informed about dumping of suspicious material under a culvert.

“The policemen cordoned off the area and called bomb disposal squad experts,” he said.

The official said the BDS personnel defused the bomb weighing 15 kilogrammes.
