SUKKUR, April 19: Owing to non-implementation of the 1991 water accord, Sindh his getting 16,000 cusecs less than its share, due to which Kharif crops, including sugarcane, cotton and rice, have been severely affected.

According to irrigation department sources, despite repeated demands by Sindh, the Indus River System Authority (IRDA) and the federal government are not implementing the 1991 water accord, according to which Sindh should receive 41,300 cusecs of water, but it is receiving 25,000 cusecs, due to which it has become difficult to overcome the water shortage in the province.

The sources said on Wednesday the flow at the Guddu Barrage up and downstream were recorded 25,034, at the Sukkur Barrage upstream it was 20,075 and downstream 3,040 and upstream at the Kotri Barrage it was 2,931, while no water is being released downstream.

EIGHT INJURED: Eight persons, including a woman, were injured when two groups of Syed community clashed following matrimonial and land disputes in Sangi near Sukkur late on Tuesday night.

Reports said that the two groups fought with each other with wooden sticks, hatchets and bricks hurting eight persons including a woman. The injured were shifted to Sangi and civil hospitals.

The injured were identified as Zohaib Ali, Ghulam Murtaza, Ms Nawab, Ali Shah, Altaf Hussain Shah, Akhtar Hussain Shah and others.

The groups have registered cases against each other with Sangi police. Police has booked Mehboob Ali, Jabbar Hussain, Altaf Hussain, Akhtar Hussain, Sarwar Shah, Nawab Shah, Asad Shah, Zohaib, Murtaza Shah and others, but has not made any arrest.

In a mishap, a ten-year-old boy Naveed Manzoor Mangrio resident of village Mangrio drowned in Mangrio canal when he was taking bath.

His body was fished out last night after five hours of hectic efforts.
