As Pakistan battles with the devastating impacts of global climate change, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), one of the country’s largest exploration and production (E&P) firms in the oil and gas sector, is stepping up to lead the charge. Guided by an acute awareness of its responsibilities, OGDCL is spearheading industry efforts to combat the looming environmental crisis.

Recognising OGDCL’s role

Ahmed Hayat Lak, the chief executive officer of OGDCL, underscores the critical need for prudence and responsibility in an industry that depends on natural resources. “We understand that for the sake of our own survival, we must respect and protect the biodiversity that sustains our existence on Earth,” he asserts.

“This realisation has driven OGDCL to actively embrace the ongoing global energy transition, ensuring it navigates this transformative shift with commitment and innovation. With a vision to address critical issues of social development and economic stability, the company is adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and explore renewable energy solutions.”

Pioneering initiatives

OGDCL has proudly taken the lead in implementing the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) model to measure and report environmental impacts, energy and water usage, and waste generation. Its ESG Strategy 2025 reflects a clear commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by the publication of its first ESG report.

“We are proud to take the lead in adapting the ESG model of measuring and reporting our environmental impacts, energy and water usage and waste generation. We have rolled out our ESG strategy 2025 and have released our first report to this effect,” Lak added.

Additionally, the company is actively supporting and taking part in initiatives like ‘Breathe Pakistan’, recognising that climate change is no longer a distant threat but rather a reality that must be faced at present. “It is an expression of our ardent commitment to protecting our environment for sustainable livelihood for everyone,” Lak emphasised.

Looming threat of climate change

Climate change is no longer a distant threat; its impacts are starkly evident. Pakistan has suffered repeated floods, scorching heat waves, and smog-choked cities over the past two decades. The World Bank’s Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) for Pakistan paints a grim picture: floods and heatwaves in 2022 alone caused over 1,700 deaths, displaced more than eight million people, and resulted in over $30 billion in damages and economic losses. The report predicts that climate-related risks could slash Pakistan’s GDP by 18-20pc by 2050.

The environmental toll is equally alarming. The WHO Global Health Observatory estimates 200 deaths per 100,000 population in Pakistan are attributable to environmental factors. Outdoor air pollution contributes to 22,000 premature adult deaths annually and over 163,000 disability-adjusted life years lost, while indoor pollution accounts for 40 million cases of acute respiratory infections and 28,000 deaths per year.

This sobering reality underscores the urgency for robust action to safeguard the nation’s future.

OGDCL’s strategy for climate adaptation

As Pakistan’s leading energy provider, OGDCL recognises its unique responsibility to address climate change, social development and economic stability. The company’s strategy is clear: enhancing energy efficiency, adopting advanced technologies to curb emissions and exploring carbon capture and storage solutions. In 2024, OGDCL took significant steps to identify emission sources, develop a GHG inventory and set emission reduction targets.

Protecting the environment lies at the heart of OGDCL’s operations. The company’s ESG Strategy 2025 includes initiatives such as a flaring reduction program and methane leak detection systems, both expected to significantly lower GHG emissions. Reforestation projects and collaborations with industry partners further demonstrate OGDCL’s dedication to preserving Pakistan’s ecological diversity.

CSR in action

OGDCL’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is deeply ingrained in its mission to create sustainable development. In 2024, the company invested in community development projects that improved access to quality education, healthcare services, clean water, and infrastructure. These initiatives have positively impacted communities across Pakistan, particularly those near OGDCL’s fields.

Through partnerships with local organisations, OGDCL drives economic development, empowers small businesses and provides vital services to underserved populations. This holistic approach ensures that the company’s contributions extend beyond economic gains to create shared value for society.

By leading with purpose, OGDCL is setting a benchmark for the industry, proving that growth and sustainability can go hand in hand. Through innovative practices and responsible corporate citizenship, the company remains steadfast in its mission to foster sustainable Pakistan.
