TAXILA: A policeman was shot dead while his comrade was injured by three suspected bandits in the Bahadur Khan village near Hattain within the limits of the Hazro police station on Friday.

According to police sources, constables Qadeer Khan and Nusrat Khan, deputed at a checkpost in Hattain were on patrolling duty when they intercepted three suspicious persons riding on a motorcycle.

As soon as they disembarked from the motorcycle, the suspects opened indiscriminate firing at the policemen, killing Qadeer Khan on the spot and injuring Nusrat Khan critically.

Police said the assailants were able to escape from the scene successfully.

Soon after the incident, officials from law enforcement agencies reached the crime scene and cordoned off the area as the police launched a manhunt to trace the attackers.

The injured cop and the body of the deceased were shifted to a hospital from where the injured cop was referred to Rawalpindi in critical condition, hospital sources said.

Later the funeral of the slain cop was held at District Police Lines which was attended by police officials.

Meanwhile, a suspected criminal who was on physical remand with Jand police in Attock was allegedly injured by his accomplices during the early hours of Friday, a spokesman for the Attock police said.

The spokesperson claimed that the injured suspect was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment and circumstantial evidence was collected from the crime scene.
