DERA GHAZI KHAN: The Ghazi University on Thursday hosted a “Round-table expert conference on climate policy dialogue” to discuss climate change and policy-making strategies to mitigate its impacts.

Experts, policymakers and representatives from academic institutions across the country participated in the event.

Vice Chancellor of Ghazi University Prof Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed inaugurated the conference and highlighted the challenges posed by climate change. He emphasised that educational institutions must play a crucial role in research and policy formulation to address this global issue.

South Punjab Special Secretary for Livestock Azfar Zia discussed the effects of climate change on agriculture and livestock. He stated that the government is formulating a new policy to mitigate these impacts.

Head of the Department of Economics Dr. Imran Lodhi shed light on how economic policies can help counter the effects of climate change. He stressed the need for aligning economic policies with climate adaptation strategies to achieve sustainable development.

Representatives from civil society actively participated in the dialogue, contributing their insights on climate policies.

During the conference, Pakistan’s first Behavioural Public Policy Unit, the Climate Behavioural Lab, was inaugurated. The lab aims to study the link between public behaviour and policy making, helping to develop effective strategies for climate change mitigation.

Prominent environmental activist Ghulam Rasool was honoured with National Climate Action Award” for his significant contributions to raising awareness and combating climate change.

The event saw participation from representatives of King’s College London, National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), Mian Nawaz Sharif Agriculture University Multan, Farmers Development Organidation, Farmers Foundation, FAO, UNICEF, Disaster Management Authority, medical colleges and teaching hospitals.

At the conclusion of the conference, participants unanimously emphasised that tackling climate change requires a collective effort from institutions and citizens alike to ensure a sustainable future.
