DACCA: East Pakistan’s Budget for 1950-51, presented today [Feb 25] in the Provincial Assembly, revealed a deficit of Rs 1.73 crores. Total receipts are estimated at Rs 17.93 crores while the total expenditure is expected to be Rs 19.66 crores. Mr Nurul Amin, the Premier, stated that the deficit would be covered by new taxation measures, proposals for which would be introduced in the House during the current session. The measures … were not specified in the Budget statement. … Mr Nurul Amin, who is holding the portfolio of Finance after the resignation of Mr Hamidul Haque Chowdhry about three months ago, explained that the deficit was mainly due to the revision of pay scales of low paid Government servants … involving an additional expenditure of one and a half crores.
In addition, a loss of about half a crore of rupees in revenue will be caused by the introduction of prohibition from April 1 this year, and this fall in revenue will have to be met by additional taxation. Debts amounting to 1.23 crores and capital expenditure of 2.59 crores, will be covered by loan proposed to be taken from the Centre.
