KARACHI: The University of Karachi has notified the appointment of senior scientist Prof Muhammad Raza Shah as the permanent Director of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS).

According to a notification dated Feb 26, the KU vice chancellor, also serving as the chairman of the Executive Board of ICCBS, has made the appointment in “pursuance of the decision of the Executive Board, International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (HEJ Research Institute and Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research) Vide Resolution No. 2 in its meeting held on 13th Dec, 2024”.

The appointment is made for a period of four years.

According to a press release, Prof Shah has made “outstanding contributions” to nanomedicine and supramolecular chemistry.

His achievements include four US patents.

Prof Shah is the recipient of Khwarizmi International Award from the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, earning the distinguished title of Khwarizmi International Laureate; Tamgha-i-Imtiaz and the Abdus Salam Award. He has also been elected as a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences.

Currently, he holds several distinct positions including; the Unesco Chair on Medicinal and Bio-organic Natural Product Chemistry, a member of the Expert Advisory Committee for the International Traditional Medicine Clinical Trial Registry China, President of the Chemical Society of Pakistan, Guest Professor at Nankai University and Visiting Professor at Hunan University of Traditional Medicine in China.

“He has authored seven books and edited four books published by Elsevier, with over 528 research articles published in international and national journals. His achievements also include four US patents and the supervision or co-supervision of 44 PhD and 61 MS/MPhil. scholars,” says a press release.
