Pakistan Beverage Limited advances CSR and climate action initiatives
In today’s world where environmental sustainability and climate change is a critical global priority, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved from a choice to an imperative. Pakistan Beverage Limited (PBL) has embraced this responsibility by actively working on sustainability initiatives that are setting a new industry standard.
From reducing plastic waste to advancing water conservation, the company has turned its 75 year legacy into a force for positive environmental change across the nation.
PBL’s key sustainability achievements
- Efficient resource management
PBL has significantly improved its water conservation efforts, pledging to reduce water wastage by 16 per cent by 2024. The company’s Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), installed between 2019 and 2020, has cut daily water wastage from 40 to 10 cubic metres. The treated water is now repurposed for park irrigation, contributing to greener urban spaces.
- Commitment to renewable energy
To reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, PBL installed a 1.5MW solar plant at its Karachi facility, with an expansion plan to increase capacity to 2MW in the coming year. Additionally, the deployment of 2,500 R290 green coolers has significantly reduced refrigerant emissions, further advancing the company’s sustainability agenda.
- Advancing circular economy practices
PBL has become Pakistan’s first bottler to integrate recycled plastic into its manufacturing processes. With majority of the country’s plastic waste ending up in landfills and waterways, this initiative plays a crucial role in minimising environmental impact and promoting sustainable production.
- Engaging communities in sustainability
Recognising the importance of community involvement, PBL launched the Plastic Recovery Bank (PRB) programme in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This initiative educates students on recycling, waste management and environmental responsibility. The company also introduced the ‘Stars of the Planet’ competition, providing funding for the most innovative student-led sustainability projects.
- Leadership and industry recognition
PBL’s sustainability success is driven by the leadership of Fozia Shaheen, the general manager of strategic operations, alongside CEO Nusair Siraj Teli and directors Muhammad Qasim Zaid Teli and Abdul Hadi Zaid Teli. Their efforts have earned PBL multiple accolades from PepsiCo, including awards for excellence in food safety, recycled PET (rPET) adoption and water replenishment initiatives.
PBL’s dedication to sustainability has positioned it as a leader in corporate climate responsibility. By integrating green practices into its production processes, the company is not only minimising its environmental impact but also setting a benchmark for the beverage industry. PBL’s proactive approach offers a hopeful vision for a greener and more sustainable Pakistan.
