TAXILA: Unidentified attackers ambushed a patrolling team of the National Highways and Motorway Police on Sunday near the Hakla Interchange on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1).

According to a spokesperson for the police, two policemen sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack. He said the vehicle caught fire following the attack and was burnt to ashes.

The injured officials were shifted to the Wah General Hospital for medical treatment.

The spokesman said Sub-Inspector Ijaz and Constable Ibrahim were on patrolling duty in the early hours of Sunday following a mugging incident in which three persons were robbed of their possessions.

“Out of nowhere, the unknown attackers restored to indiscriminate firing at the police, injuring policemen and burning the vehicle to ashes,” he said.

The assailants fled the scene taking advantage of the darkness.

Soon after the incident, officials of the motorway police, Taxila police, and other law-enforcement agencies rushed to the scene.

They cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to apprehend the suspects.

Taxila police have registered a case and launched further investigation.
