HYDERABAD: Dr Ghulam Mohammad Lakho, a noted historian and a former chairman of Sindh University’s general history department, died in Jamshoro on Monday evening at the age of 71.
He was laid to rest in the Amin Shah graveyard near Daulatpur on Tuesday.
Dr Lakho’s contemporaries, associates, colleagues and admirers have described his death as a great loss to the Sindholgical studies, history, literature and education.
Born on July 6,1954 in Mitha Khan Jokhio village of Qazi Ahmed taluka in Shaheed Benazirabad district,
Dr Lakho had received his early education within his village and done his Masters (in English and History) and PhD from the University of Sindh. He joined the provincial education department in 1982 and served as lecture of the two subjects. He also served as lecturer at SU’s Pakistan Study Centre from 1987 to 1991 before joining the university’s general history department in 1991. He had done his PhD in 1999 when he was an assistant professor.
Dr Lakho was author, editor and translator of 16 books on history, culture and literature of Sindh.
He also wrote over 130 research articles in Sindhi, Urdu and English languages. He had retired as a professor at SU in 2014.
