HYDERABAD: Sind University today [March 8] in a Special Convocation conferred degrees of Doctor of Literature on late Dr H.T. Sorley and Dr Annemarie Schimmel for their meritorious contributions in the field of literature and cultural research relating to the Indus civilisation. The simple but colourful ceremony was presided over by the Sind Minister for Education and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Sind University, Mr Pyarali Allana. Mrs Anne Osbourne daughter of Dr Sorley, received the degree on behalf of her late father.
In his presidential address Mr Allana paid his profound tributes to the late Dr Sorley and Dr Schimmel for their qualitative writings and research which … had enhanced their international reputation. … Mr Allana said that Dr Sorley introduced Sind and its great poet Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai to the whole world. Felicitating Dr Schimmel, who was present … Mr Allana said that besides other important subjects relating to Pakistan, the study of Sindhi language and literature, Sufistic thought as well as Sindhi folklore have continuously engaged the attention of Dr Schimmel and she has produced scholarly articles which have already been cited.
