15 BZU students held for attacking guards

LAHORE: Multan police on Thursday arrested 15 students of the Bahauddin Zakariya University for attacking security guards and damaging public property during a protest at the main gate of the campus.

Pashtun, Baloch and Seraiki Councils students gathered outside the BZU main gate to lodge protest against the expulsion of six students on disciplinary grounds.The students closed the main gate and did not allow anyone to enter or leave the campus. The protestors also attacked security guards who tried to open the gates.

The administration called police which baton-charged the protestors and took 15 of them into custody.

Pushtun Council’s Amin Khan said that the students were protesting against the administration for wrongly expelling their activists and not allowing them to sit the examinations. He said three students were injured in police action.

BZU Resident Officer Dr Muqarrab Akbar told media the protestors had closed the main gate of the campus and did not allow anyone to enter and leave the university.

Protesting expulsions, students harass girls

He said the students harassed a teacher who did not allow a student to sit the examination since he had been expelled.

He said the protestors also harassed girls and they would not be allowed to pressurize the administration. He said strict action would be taken against the students for blocking the gates and harassing other students.The BZ police station nominated 31 students, with 22 yet to be identified, and arrested 15 of them.

Students’ blockade of road and the main gate was still on till the filing of this report at 9pm.
