A fuel and gas shortage crisis, along with that of flour, has gripped the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s humanitarian blockade, Al Jazeera reports.

Al Jazeera visited one of the few bakeries still operating in the southern city of Khan Younis and spoke to people about how the blockade is affecting them.

“I arrived at seven in the morning to buy some bread for my family. I am the one who must feed and support five children. I sent one child to the charity, and another to bring some water, and I am here after walking a distance of about 12km to find some bread for the family,” one man said.

“The crossings’ closure will lead to catastrophes. There are people who lost their lives because of the crowding and jostling to get some bread at the bakery,” another man told Al Jazeera.

“I need to go back to prepare the Iftar food for my children. […] I resort to firewood to cook due to the lack of gas. Our life is miserable and full of suffering,” a woman at the bakery said.
