A bloody Nobel?

Published March 17, 2025

THIS is with reference to the report ‘Trump among 300 others nominated for Nobel Peace Prize’ (March 6). This is a big insult to human intellect. On what basis has Donald Trump been nominated? Is it because of all the lives that have been lost owing to Trump’s military aid to Israel?

If Trump does get the prize, it will be a big blow to the institution and to the memory of Alfred Nobel himself. Nobel had founded this prize for leaders who work for peace around the globe, not for someone who has his hands stained with the blood of innocent men, women as well as children.

America’s aid in the last one year and the current support by Trump has emb-oldened Israel, and now a peace deal between Israel and Palestinians is also in danger.

About 50,000 Palestinians have been murdered and more than 100,000 have been injured in Israeli bombardments since Oct 7, 2023. Trump has also initiated action against students and teachers of American universities who agitated against Israel’s brutality in Gaza.

Trump, however, may be a nominee if he forces Israel to make a peace deal with Palestine, especially on Gaza, and reach a final solution to the Palestine issue.

I hope that the Nobel Peace Prize committee will reject Trump’s nomination for this coveted prize in the current context. Nobel Prize is for peacemakers, not for murderers of innocent people.
