SARGODHA: A district and sessions judge sentenced a man to death on Monday for murdering his wife after she demanded subsistence for their child.
Muhammad Akram of Sahi Colony, Cantt, killed his wife, Atiya Bibi, on Oct 23, 2023. On the complaint of the victim’s father, Cantt police registered a case under sections 302, 324, 337 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and arrested the suspect.
District and Sessions Judge Raja Qamar Sultan also ordered the convict to pay Rs200,000 in compensation.
FOUL ARRESTS: A case was registered against Naeem Gulzar, a manager at a commercial mall on University Road, for overpricing, but he was reportedly released after the intervention of influential officials.
Instead, two sanitation workers, Noman Yousuf Masih and Haroon Masih, were arrested under section 10 of the Anti-Price Control Act and section 7 of the Price Control Act.
Earlier meat seller Papu was arrested for the same offence, but his servant was later substituted. A deal between meat merchants and the administration allegedly allowed the sale of expensive meat under the pretext of ‘special meat.
KILLED: Armed motorcyclists opened fire at a chicken shop in Block 13 Chowk after Iftar and killed a youth over an old enmity before fleeing the scene.
The deceased was identified as Mohsin Joyia, 25, from Sabharwal Fatima Jinnah Colony. At the time of the attack, he was sitting near the shop’s counter.
Police shifted the body to DHQ Teaching Hospital for postmortem and launched an investigation. Later, one of the suspects, Sadam Butt, uploaded a video claiming the killing was an act of revenge.
TRANSFERRED: District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Sohaib Ashraf has transferred over 1,000 police personnel who had been stationed at the same post for an extended period.
Those transferred include sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and constables from 27 police stations across the district.
The DPO said the decision was made to improve law and order, directing the transferred officials to assume their new duties immediately.
FRAUD: A man dressed as a police official stole Rs600,000 from an elderly man’s account by swapping his ATM card.
According to sources, Muhammad Chiragh was withdrawing money when the suspect entered the ATM booth, switched the card, and later withdrew the amount.
Satellite Town police registered a case and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspect.
