GUJRAT: The majestic Gujrat Eidgah mosque, a marvelous piece of architecture built in 1935, is in a dilapidated state, requiring immediate attention of the authorities responsible for the preservation and restoration of heritage sites.
A recent visit to the place reveals that the grand structure of the mosque has been hit by ravages of time as cracks have started appearing in its main dome, calling for prompt action by the government as well as international organisations like Aga Khan Foundation for its repair and restoration.
The aesthetically rich structure resembling Mughal-era Badshahi Masjid of Lahore, with detailed decorative work is the central mosque where Eid prayers are offered, besides regular daily prayers.
Noticing the beauty of the mosque, Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan, the wife of first prime minister of the country, consulted Mian Barkat Ali, the father of the late Mian Akbar, a former parliamentarian, who was its custodian, and announced a donation of a loudspeaker for the mosque.
The families of Mian Akbar and Thekedar Rasheed, along with some others, now have administrative control of the mosque.
Punjab’s former education minister Mian Imran Masood recently organised a visit of the Portuguese ambassador to the mosque in February to highlight the beauty of the monument.
Gujrat’s ex-tehsil nazim Mian Haroon Masood, who is among those looking after the administrative affairs of the mosque, stressed the need to launch a campaign to create awareness about this magnificent piece of architecture among the younger generation to include them in the efforts for its preservation and restoration.
