SUKKUR: Sukkur Airport is expected to begin international flights soon as approval for two weekly flights from Sukkur to Jeddah starting July this year has been granted, according to Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority officials.

Director of PCAA’s P&D Department, Abbas Sheikh, along with other officials visited the Sukkur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) on Wednesday and discussed with the chamber leaders expansion plans for Sukkur Airport, which included building of cargo terminals and runways to facilitate cargo flights.

The PCAA officials sought details of products exported from Sukkur and surrounding areas to help develop a comprehensive development plan for passenger and cargo flights.

Former president of the chamber, Engineer Abdul Fatah Sheikh, highlighted various products exported from Sukkur, including dates, cotton, rice, pickles, fruits, vegetables, fish and handicrafts, which were currently exported through Karachi, Multan and Faisalabad. After the airport’s expansion, these products would be exported directly from Sukkur, he said.

The SCCI’s committee convener, Mohammad Mohsin Farooq, announced that approval had been granted for two weekly flights from Sukkur to Jeddah starting July this year, thanks to efforts of Bilal Waqar Khan and SCCI president Khalid Kakezai.
