LAHORE: The restoration of the historic Akbari Spice Market has begun.

“The project includes the reconstruction of the ancient Akbari Gate and improvements to the market’s infrastructure. The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) is overseeing its implementation,” said Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb.

“This project aims at preserving Lahore’s historical heritage and serves as a major milestone in boosting the economy and tourism. Shop signboards and spice racks will be redesigned, while walkways for pedestrians will remain open, with enhanced accessibility facilities,” the minister said.

WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari said the reconstruction of the ancient Akbari Gate will help revive its historical significance.

“Solar lights will be installed to provide an eco-friendly lighting system in the old city. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally overseeing this project to modernize Lahore’s cultural and commercial hub, ensuring better facilities for citizens,” he said.

The project will be completed at a cost of Rs999.61 million.
