KASUR: A youth was gunned down in the name of honour on the premises of district courts on Thursday.
According to B-Division police, Waqas, a resident of Roshan Bheela village, had married a woman from the same village against the wishes of her family a few weeks ago. The couple later moved to an undisclosed location.
Following the marriage, the woman’s family filed a kidnapping case against Waqas at Sheikhum police station. However, during court proceedings, the woman testified before the area magistrate that she had willingly married Waqas and was not abducted.
On Thursday, the court acquitted Waqas and dismissed the kidnapping charges against him.
As Waqas moved out of the courtroom, his brother-in-law Imran allegedly opened fire on him, killing him instantly. The suspect managed his escape.
Police shifted the body to DHQ Hospital for autopsy and have launched an investigation into the incident.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, a man shot dead his nephew (his sister’s son) allegedly to preserve her honour at Tatara Kamal village within the jurisdiction of Mandi Usmanwala police station.
Reports said the victim had eloped with the accused’s wife several months ago from Okara district. The couple had been living in Kasur’s Tatara Kamal village since then. Police have registered both cases and initiated further investigations.
