ISLAMABAD: Mohammad Abid defeated Hamza Roman in a thrilling three-setter as the Serena Masters Series kicked off here at the PTF Tennis Complex on Tuesday.

Abid prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a closely contested match to advance in the tournament, which features Pakistan’s top eight male and female tennis players.

Senior players Aqeel Khan, Mohammad Abid, Yousaf Khalil, Barkatullah, Shahzad Khan, Heera Ashiq, Hamza, and Sami Zeb Khan are participating in the men’s event.

While in the women’s event, Ushna Suhail, Meheq Khokhar, Sheeza Sajid, Lalarukh Sajid, Mahrukh Sajid, Fajar Fayyaz and Labiaka Durab are taking part.

Pakistan Tennis Federation president Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who is also competing in the doubles event, emphasised the event’s significance at a press conference.

Men singles (1st round): Yousaf Khalil bt Heera Ashiq 7-5, 6-4; Barkatullah bt Shahzad Khan 6-2, 6-0; Aqeel Khan bt Sami Zeb Khan 6-1, 6-4

Ladies singles (1st round): Meheq Khokhar bt Lalarukh Sajid 6-0, 6-2; Sheeza Sajid bt Labaika Durab 7-6(2), 6-3; Mahrukh Sajid bt Fajar Fayaz 6-2, 6-4.—Sports Reporter
