KARACHI: An Indian fisherman, who was confined in District Jail Malir for the past three years, took his own life inside the prison on Wednesday.

Jail Superintendent Arshad Husain told Dawn that Gaurav Ram Anand, 52, used a piece of rope to hang himself in the bathroom of his barracks on Tuesday night.

He said that the jail staff knew about the incident in the early hours of Wednesday. They called a duty doctor, who examined the body and declared him dead at 2:20am.

He said that after a judicial magistrate supervised the post-mortem examination and ordered to keep the body at the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth until further orders.

The fisherman was arrested in February 2022 by the Docks police.
