SUKKUR, Feb 6: A team of the Human Rights of Pakistan visited Ghotki on Tuesday to investigate the killing of Noor Khatoon, a Bengali woman, who was shot dead by an influential landlord, Gulsher Maher.
The team was led by its coordinator, Akhter Baloch, Lala Rehman, President Hyderabad Press Club, Rashid Rajar, editor of a Sindhi daily, and others.
It will also try to help a woman, Najma Gabol, whose life was under threat and who was passing a miserable life in the Jarwar village, Ghotki District.
The team met senior police officials and the district administration. They provided hints on how Ms Najma could be protected.
Sources said that her husband, Rab Nawaz, and other relatives wanted to kill her on the pretext of Karo-kari as she wanted a divorce from her husband through the court. She narrowly escaped and took refuge in the village where she was passing a miserable life.
The team also recorded the statements of the people who resided there about the murder of Noor Khatoon. They learnt that police had neither registered an FIR nor had arrested the culprits.
The local activists of the HRCP came to know about the murder last week and requested the SSP, Ghotki, to arrest Gulsher Maher, who was allegedly involved in not only killing Noor Khatoon but also raping her several times.
The HRCP source told this correspondent from Ghotki that the fact-finding report will be issued shortly.
