HYDERABAD, May 26: The Sindh Employees Alliance (SEA) warned again on Friday that if the authorities did not remove the chairman of Sukkur educational board by May 28, teachers would boycott the ongoing intermediate examinations in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana.

The alliance’s secretary general, Prof Liaquat Aziz, told a news conference at the press club that the behaviour of Dr Mehboob Shaikh, chairman of the Sukkur board, towards the teachers, especially female teachers, was uncivilised.

He alleged that on May 23 Dr Mehboob himself cursed and slapped Mohammad Bux Mandan Baloch before his guard assaulted the teacher during his visit to an examination centre at the Government Girls College, Khairpur in the presence of a large number of girl students and teachers.

Mr Aziz said that the alliance had made it clear in its previous press conference that the teachers and the employees would not create any hurdles to the academic process as well as examinations and it kept its word by ensuring the examinations for primary classes and theory and practical for matriculation were held in a peaceful manner.

The alliance made sure the examinations for intermediate were also held in a congenial atmosphere but the government mistook it for its weakness. It issued show-cause notices to teachers and transferred many to other districts, he said.

Following this, the alliance’s central action committee at its meeting held on Thursday decided to boycott the examinations from May 29 by putting locks on all the educational institutions and offices of the educational department within the jurisdiction of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas and Larkana boards.

The meeting decided to hold protest rallies at all the taluka headquarters on May 27 (today) and organise a joint meeting of the alliance’s district action committees on May 30 at the central office of the Primary Teachers Association in Hyderabad.

The alliance also decided to stage a protest rally in Karachi and a sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s House on June 15, said Mr Aziz underlining the alliance’s nine-point charter of demands.

Alliance chairman, Mohammad Rafique Jarwar; senior vice-chairman, Abdul Ghani Kumbhar; vice chairman, Hussain Bux Khamisani and other office-bearers were present at the press conference.

MQM: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Hyderabad on Friday observed the 16th anniversary of Pakka Qilla incident by holding Quran khwani and fateha khwani at its zonal office.
