GUJRANWALA, June 14: The district nazim cancelled the tenders for the construction of 25 roads which were approved by the highway department at its meeting just a few hours ago.

The nazim took the action after learning that some contractors have joined hands with the connivance of the highway department.

Reports said the highway department gave an approval of some tenders for the construction of 25 roads in and around the city after consultation with the auction committee chairman and the district naib nazim.

As the naib nazim paid surprise visit to the department office, he came to know about irregularities in allotting the construction work. He submitted a detailed report to nazim Fayyaz Ahmad Chattha, who reportedly cancelled these tenders instantly and ordered to call fresh ones.

EXECUTION: A condemned prisoner will be hanged on Thursday (today) on jail premises, as mediation efforts of some half a dozen union council nazims of the two parties could not succeed.

According to the prosecution, accused Tahir Mahmood alias Tahari of Talwandi Khajoorwali had killed Muhammad Farooq in Cantonment area over an old enmity on Dec 6, 1994. A local court had handed him down death sentence. The Lahore high court and the Supreme Court also upheld the decision of the lower court while the president also rejected their clemency appeals.

A local Anti-Terrorism Court on Wednesday issued death warrants against three convicts — Muhammad Iqbal of Kamoki Sadar and Zafarullah and Qaiser Mehmood of Gujrat - for their involvement in murder cases.

The court fixed July 5 for their execution after upper courts rejected their appeals. The president also cast away his mercy appeal.

According to the prosecution, the former had killed constable Amin while the latter five people — Riaz, Pervaiz, Liaquat, Amjad and Ashraf over a murder enmity at Shaheen Chowk in 2000.

RECOVERY: A sessions court bailiff on Wednesday recovered a youth from the Alipur Chattha police station lock-up and produced him in court.

The court summoned an SHO and an investigating officer on the next date of hearing.

The police had picked up Ghulam Murtaza from his house on the suspicion that he had committed theft at the outhouse of MPA Akmal Chattha, and detained him at police station.

His father M. Jamil moved court and alleged that his son was kept in illegal confinement.

Gepco: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company has decided to abolish surcharge on the electricity bills of all federal and provincial government functionaries, autonomous bodies and local-body institutions for May 2006 in case of payment of all outstanding dues up to June 30.

The decision was taken at a meeting of all chief executives of the electric companies with the Wapda chairman.

The Gepco chief executive, Brig Saifullah Khalid, appealed to all government-sector consumers to clear their outstanding dues till June 30.

DEMAND: The local chamber of commerce and industry urged the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to reduce the duty on stainless steel and raw material of the ceramic industry to boost the economy.

A chamber’s delegation, led by its president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt, met with CBR chairman Abdullah Yousaf and apprised him of the reservation of industrialists.

He assured the delegation that duty on these items would be reduced shortly.

POLICEMEN: Officiating DIG (crime) Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar Virk and DPO Mian Muhammad Asif resumed their duties on Wednesday.
