HYDERABAD, June 23: About 100,000 dog-bite cases a year are reported in Pakistan and 60,000 people die of hydrophobia in the world. This was stated by Dr Shahab Qazi, manager of the National Programme of the National Institute for Health, Islamabad, at a training workshop here on Friday.

The programme was held at the office of the director-general of the Sindh Health Services.

Medical superintendents of various government hospitals, doctors, paramedics and veterinary staff attended the workshop.

Dr Qazi said that in India, about 30,000 people died annually due to rabies.

He said that rabies virus, transmitted to human from rabid animals, was extremely fatal and it paralysed the entire sensory system and brain.

He spoke about symptoms of rabies and called for immediate treatment of victims.

Dr Iqbal Shah, Dr Maqbool Solangi and Dr Rafique Qureshi also spoke on the occasion.

They said that the government was spending tens of millions of rupees on anti-rabies vaccine.

They said the Sindh health department had also taken adequate steps in this regard.

They said that it was the duty of the local bodies to eliminate stray dogs.

BAITUL MAAL: The food support steering committee of the Tando Allahyar district has announced that the deserving people will be paid Rs3,000 each with effect from June 26.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the committee said that registered deserving people had been advised to receive payment from the Baitul Maal funds from the concerned post offices.

A total amount of Rs9.609 million will be distributed among the 3,203 deserving people.
