LAHORE, July 10: Three-year-old colt, Sher-i-Gujrat ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II, romped home an easy winner in the feature event during the day and night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

He beat Miss Photogenic by eight lengths while Zargar and Pawan completed the frame among six starters left after the last-minute withdrawal of popular colt, Swing from the race certified feverish by the Veterinary Officer.

Last Sunday’s punishments to a trainer and few riders had salutary effect on races as all the events were held on merit with chance horses winning. This also resulted in the withdrawal of fifteen horses for various reasons from day’s races.

The third race has had to be cancelled because of withdrawal of six horses. As only four were left in the field the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards had no option but to cancel the race before it was run.

The card was thus reduced to six events only.

In the supporting and sixth race, the chance duo, Top Cat and Gold Krik and Zangeer were withdrawn leaving only five runners. Bright Star won defeating Druree by a big margin of distance.

Bay filly Discovery in a front-running display won the fourth race giving an armchair ride to jockey Shahid Rehman, who sat still only to guide the filly on right course to gain a five-length victory over Fair Game.

Apprentice Ahmad Shah gave a splendid display of horsemanship piloting Shaba Queen to victory in the second race.

Two lengths slow at the start, the mare trailed last in the eleven strong field but came like a flash overtaking all and win the event five lengths ahead of Dancing Star.

Ironically, Shaba Queen ran off the frame last Sunday under riding boy Azhar Hussain in a relatively slow timing of the race. His trainer seems to be magic man, who can make the mare go in one week or it was .due to the presence of LRC chairman Tariq Aziz, who never hesitates to take prompt action.

Race-goers returned home with their purses swollen as favourites swept the entire card. It was a cloudy and windy day, a rare phenomenon in the month of July.

Midway through the proceedings it started drizzling at short intervals till the last race making the muggy weather pleasant at once.
