Okara sewerage system a shambles

OKARA, July 20: The sewerage water is being flushed into a temporary pool after the collapse of main sewerage disposal tanks near Octroi Post No 6 about a fortnight ago.

Defence Minister Rao Sikander Iqbal, District Nazim Syed Asad Ali Gillani, tehsil nazim Rao Jamil Akhtar and TMA’s Chaudhry Muhammad Muslim visited on Thursday the site of the collapsed sewerage disposal tanks built some 35 years ago.

Speaking on the occasion, the defence minister said that the sewerage line had been encroached upon as more than 300 houses and shops were built on a patch of some 1,500 feet long sewerage line.

He said the sewerage line was also passing through the Women Degree College No 2 situated adjacent to Wazir Colony.

The TMO said that a new sewerage line should be laid immediately to avoid any unpleasant situation, as there was an imminent threat of collapsing of the whole sewerage system.

For this purpose, he said the TMA had already completed a survey for the new sewerage system, keeping in view the rate of increase in the population. At least Rs12.5 million were required for the project, he said.

Tehsil Nazim Rao Jamil Akhtar said that the TMA had no financial resources to carry out work on the project, which was needed to be initiated on emergent basis.

The people, the naib nazim and nazims have urged the defence minister to make arrangements for the required funds.

BOOKED: A man masquerading himself as doctor was booked here on Thursday.

Accused Rai Abid Hussain was going on his unregistered car when the traffic police stopped him on GT Road near NHA Toll Plaza. The accused introduced himself as an orthopedic surgeon of the Pakpattan DHQ Hospital. When contacted, the hospital administration did not verify the claim of the accused.

Okara Cantonment police have registered a case against the accused under Section 419 PPC.
