NAROWAL: Police have registered a first information report (FIR) against 150 people, mainly including the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers from Sialkot, for allegedly opening fire at a police team, attacking officers, pelting stones, violating Section 144 and committing “acts of terrorism”.

The FIR says that during the “attack”, a police constable was injured and the window glasses of a police van shattered.

The complainant, Inspector Basharat Ali, stated in the FIR that he was performing duty on Paris Road, Sialkot, when he saw a procession comprising 100-150 people approaching from the direction of Allama Iqbal Chowk.

He alleged that the procession participants, armed with modern automatic weapons, clubs, iron rods, and stones, were chanting slogans in support of the PTI and against the government, creating unrest and disturbing peace in the area.

He also alleged that the participants attacked a police team using clubs, iron rods and stones, while those carrying arms opened fire using modern weapons.

He stated that a Constable, Hamid Ali, was critically injured in the attack by the agitated protesters and was shifted to a government hospital for medical treatment.

The protesters also smashed the window glasses of a police van parked there, besides damaging other public and private properties, he added.

Acting on the complaint, Kotwali police registered an FIR against 27 nominated suspects, including PTI leaders Umar Dar, Saeed Bhalli, Barrister Jamshed, Mian Sarmad, Mian Ijaz, Hafiz Hamid Raza, Sajid Pervaiz, Umar Javed, Usman Rajput, Usman Bhatti, and Mehar Faisal, besides 100-150 unidentified individuals.

The police registered the case under Section 16 of the MPO, Section 7 of the ATA, and sections 148, 149, 186, 188, 353, 431, 440, and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The charges include terrorism, violation of the Section 144, interference in the discharge of official duties, assault on a police team, damage to the public and private property, and attempted murder.

According to sources, police teams are conducting raids to arrest the suspects.

Sialkot District Police Officer (DPO) retired Capt Dost Muhammad stated that no individual or group would be permitted to engage in terrorism, incite unrest, or disturb peace. He added that strict legal action would be taken against those who attacked the police team and caused damage to the public and private property.

The PTI leaders and supporters had taken out a procession in Sialkot on Tuesday to back Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who was visiting Punjab.
