LAHORE: Police have been directed to launch a comprehensive crackdown on elements involved in altering IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones.

Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana issued these orders at a meeting held to review measures to curb organised gangs involved in theft and improve surveillance at crime hotspots. An IMEI is a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to almost every mobile phone and cellular device. T-Mobile +IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. Think of it as a digital fingerprint for your phone. It stays the same even if you change your SIM card or reset your phone.

The meeting discussed geofencing theft hotspots and strengthening surveillance in these areas. It also discussed the effective use of human intelligence and modern technology to prevent and detect theft cases. It was agreed to deploy additional personnel at crime hotspots, intensify patrolling and conduct decoy operations in plainclothes.

The CCPO directed police to arrest those involved in pickpocketing and mobile phone theft and bring them to justice. He ordered increased surveillance of pickpockets at crowded places, markets, public gatherings and on public transport to ensure safety of citizens.

The meeting decided to launch a comprehensive crackdown on elements involved in changing the IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones.

The CCPO directed officers to trace the entire network through backtracking of recovered mobile phones and ensure verification of identification documents and relevant records in mobile phone transactions. He also ordered strict action against those involved in illegal purchase and sale of stolen mobile phones and their spare parts.
