ISLAMABAD: City managers on Sunday announced that they are starting an initiative of making ‘Plastic-Free Islamabad’.

According to a statement issued by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), this initiative has been launched with the objective of reducing plastic pollution and promoting a cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable federal capital.

The assistant commissioners concerned will monitor their respective areas to make this initiative successful.

It is relevant to note here that the use of plastic bag in Islamabad has been banned for years, but despite this, plastic bags are still being used in many parts of the capital.

According to the press release, the initiative aims to create greater public awareness about the harmful environmental impact of single use plastics and encourage citizens, traders, businesses, educational institutions, food outlets and other stakeholders to adopt reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

It said special focus will be given to markets, commercial areas, food outlets, educational institutions, parks, recreational areas and other public places where the cooperation of citizens and businesses can play a vital role in reducing plastic waste.

“Traders and business communities are being encouraged to support the initiative by reducing the distribution of single use plastic bags and facilitating customers with reusable and eco-friendly alternatives,” it said, adding that citizens are being encouraged to contribute by saying “no” to single-use plastics, carrying reusable bags, avoiding unnecessary plastic packaging and ensuring the proper disposal of waste.

According to CDA, the initiative is expected to contribute not only to a cleaner Islamabad but also to an improved quality of life, public well being and healthier surroundings for its residents and visitors. “Reduction in plastic waste can help keep streets, markets, parks, public spaces and drainage systems cleaner, while supporting better waste management and reducing the accumulation of waste in the urban environment,” it said.
