PESHAWAR/KHYBER: With the police remaining on high alert, Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad visited Bara tehsil in Khyber tribal district on Wednesday to monitor the law and order situation.

They said the security situation in Bara Bazaar and surrounding areas was being continuously monitored, while the CCPO was personally overseeing it.

In a statement issued from his office, Dr Ahmad said there was effective coordination between Peshawar and Khyber police as well as other law-enforcement agencies to protect public life and property, government installations and sensitive places.

“Maintaining law and order and providing a safe environment to citizens is our top priority. There will be no compromise on the rule of law, so violators of the law will be dealt with strictly,” he said.

The CCPO said legal action would be taken against those who damaged government property, committed vandalism or caused unrest. He said that the police were fully alert and were utilising all available resources to protect citizens and establish the writ of the government.

Dr Ahmad urged people to cooperate with the police and administration in maintaining law and order and that Peshawar police, in coordination with Khyber police, were committed to maintaining peace in the area.

Also, a tense calm prevailed in Bara tehsil of Khyber district on Wednesday after the police barricaded Bara Bazaar from all sides sealing all entry and exit points.

Police officials said additional personnel had been deployed in Bara Bazaar.

They said CCPO Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad visited the site of Tuesday’s clashes between police and PTI protesters.

A statement issued by the office of the district police officer in the Shakas area of Jamrud said security had been tightened and measures taken to maintain law and order in Bara Bazaar and surrounding areas. It said Khyber and Peshawar police were closely coordinating with other law-enforcement agencies.

Sources said the local PTI leadership had advised supporters and sympathisers to refrain from staging protests following Tuesday’s violent demonstration in Bara.

They claimed that local MNA Iqbal Afridi and MPA Abdul Ghani had gone into hiding.

Police booked 15 PTI supporters for demonstrating in Jamrud.

The situation remained peaceful in Landi Kotal, with all roads, including the main Peshawar-Torkham Highway, open to traffic.

On Tuesday, five PTI workers were injured during a protest in Bara tehsil that turned violent after participants torched government buildings and clashed with riot police.

Sources said angry protesters set fire to the nearby Nadra office and part of the Rescue 1122 building.

PTI workers were injured during clashes with police and the firing in the air, with the party leaders accusing police of directly firing at protesters.

Police denied the allegation. The injured workers were taken to a local hospital, where their condition was stated to be out of danger.
