BANNU: Five policemen were injured when armed men attacked the Gumbati checkpost in Wazir subdivision of Bannu district on Thursday night.

Police claimed that several terrorists were also killed or injured when the cops manning the checkpost returned fire.

According to police, five personnel were injured in the attack.

Police said that explosive devices were recovered from different locations during a subsequent search operation. The Bomb Disposal Squad experts defused the explosive devices.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Ghafoor Afridi visited the injured personnel at the hospital and announced that the police department would bear all their medical expenses.

Following the attack, district police officer Shafiullah Gandapur, SP Shakeel and DSP Wazir subdivision Hafeez-ur-Rehman visited the site and reviewed the security situation.

Meanwhile, the body of a man was found on Friday morning near the boundary wall of Government Postgraduate College in the Muslimabad area of Bannu.

A note found with the body alleged that the man, identified as Naseebullah alias Rehmat Ali, was an associate of terrorists and had been involved in attacks on police stations and checkposts.

However, the allegations could not be independently verified.

It remained unclear who had written the note and placed it beside the body.

The recovery came days after a head constable, Raqeeb Khan, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the same area on Wednesday.

Questions were raised about a possible link between the two incidents, but police have neither confirmed nor ruled out any connection.

Separately, the interior ministry has handed over modern armoured personnel vehicles to Bannu police to enhance their operational capacity to address security challenges and improve law and order in the district.
