KHYBER: Authorities sealed five private schools on Friday after their buildings were found to be in extremely poor condition.

Officials in Landi Kotal, Bara and Jamrud said that assistant commissioners in the three tehsils paid visits to a number of private schools to inspect the buildings’ condition.

Khyber Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali had directed the relevant authorities to conduct visits of private schools after 30 students and a teacher were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar on Thursday.

For this purpose, the district administration had constituted three committees comprising the assistant commissioners of the three tehsils and officials of the education, communication and works, irrigation departments and the tehsil municipal administration.

The teams were assigned the responsibility of conducting visits to all the public and private sector educational institutions and submitting reports about the condition of the school buildings.

Officials said that five schools, which were sealed in Landi Kotal, Bara and Jamrud, were found to be in very poor condition, posing a threat to the lives of both students and teachers.

Officials said roofs of some of the sealed schools were covered merely with bamboo while the walls were crumbling, putting the lives of students and teachers at great risk.

They said that more visits would be conducted in the coming days. They said that inspection of public sector educational institutions would also be carried out.
