KHUZDAR: A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Khuzdar and surrounding areas on Saturday, killing one person and damaging several mud houses.

Officials said the tremors were felt at 10:07am, prompting residents to leave their homes and seek refuge in open areas amid widespread panic.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 48 kilometres northwest of Khuzdar at a depth of 25 kilometres.

“One person was killed after a large rock fell from a mountain in the Naal area,” officials said.

According to official sources, a rock fell from a nearby mountain in Anari, in the Besar area of Naal, and struck Abdul Rahim, son of Qamaruddin and a resident of Wadh, killing him on the spot.
