• Man, two sons among seven killed near Muzaffarabad
• Two women, five daughters lose lives in Murree tragedy

MUZAFFARABAD/RAWALPINDI: At least 14 people were killed in two accidents on mountainous roads, when the vehicles they were travelling in fell into ravines near Murree, and on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad on Sunday, officials said.

AJK officials added that seven people, including a father and his two sons, were killed when a passenger jeep veered off the road and plunged down a mountainside on the outskirts of state capital.

The jeep had set off from Nakka Shakkar Pattiyan village for Seri Darra village, northeast of Muzaffarabad. They had barely gone three kilometres when the accident occurred around noon near Sathra Podemar village, according to police and administration officials.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a landslide-affected stretch, and the vehicle plunged down the mountain slope, rolling over several times before coming to a halt.

According to a police report, the jeep fell around “1,000 and 1,500 feet” from the road. All seven occupants died at the scene. “Their bodies were scattered across the accident site,” Muzaffarabad Additional Deputy Commissioner Zeeshan Nisar told Dawn.

Later, he added, locals along with rescue officials retrieved the bodies.

The deceased were identified as Fayyaz Ahmed, 50, and his sons, Ubaid Fayyaz, 27, Azam Fayyaz, 17; Muhammad Khalid, 30; Shafaat, 35; and Iftikhar Hussain, 18; and Abdul Waheed, 40, who was driving the jeep.

Police said their bodies had been handed over to their relatives for burial.

Van plunges into ditch

Separately, two women and five children were killed when a van plunged into a deep ditch and caught fire near Murree, police said.

According to local police, the accident occurred near Broha Chowk in the Chowki Tret area of Murree district, when a Suzuki Bolan van carrying passengers veered off the road and fell into a deep ditch before being engulfed in flames.

Five children and two women were among those killed in the accident. The deceased were identified as Almas, wife of Tanveer, along with her three daughters; and Shahina, wife of Mumtaz, along with her two daughters.

The victims belonged to the same family from Dhalla village in Murree district.

The family was returning to their village after attending a wedding ceremony in Abbottabad when the tragic accident occurred, according to DPO Dr Raza Tanveer.

The injured were shifted to Rawalpindi’s Holy Family Hospital for treatment. They were identified as Arshad, Nighat, Laiba, Kashan, Ema Noor, Tayyab Mahmood and Raima Noor.
