Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed matters of “national importance” with PML-N President Nawaz Sharif during a visit to the latter’s residence in Lahore’s Jati Umra on Sunday, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

The outlet reported that the two leaders held detailed discussions regarding the country’s political situation as well as “other matters of national importance”.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Nawaz’s daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, were also present on the occasion.

PM Shehbaz briefed the PML-N president on the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and on recent initiatives taken for the development and prosperity of the province, Radio Pakistan added.

The Centre has imposed emergency and governor’s rule in KP since Oct 11, citing the provincial government’s “deliberate disengagement” from the fight against terrorism, and the new administrative setup led by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has stressed that improving counterterrorism measures is its topmost priority.

Both PM Shehbaz and his brother Nawaz have defended the decision to impose the emergency, with the premier saying the federal government had been “compelled” to take the step over security concerns and the elder Sharif arguing that the intervention should have come much earlier.

The premier also apprised Nawaz of “the ongoing economic reforms by the government, the challenges being faced and the measures being taken to address them”, the outlet said.

The meeting also deliberated on ways to improve the national economy further, it added.
