THATTA, Aug 3: Heavy rain coupled with intrusion of sea water, particularly in the Indus delta region, has resulted in inundation of several villages.
Several villages on the right side of the Seer Creek in Jati taluka, including a major fishermen settlement Ishaque Themore, have been submerged under the oceanic and rainwater.
In Ghorabari and Kharochhan talukas, similar situation prevailed where the district government has set up eight relief camps.
The administration said that efforts were being made to shift affected people to safer places and to provide maximum facilities.
In Jati taluka, local people claimed that 90 fishermen of Themore, Mallah and Manjhria villages who had gone in sea for fishing were missing.
The missing fishermen have been identified as Ramzan, Qadir Bux, Ghulam Qadir, Suleman, Abdul Latif and Saleh Mohammad.
Residents of over a dozen villages were stranded in oceanic water and all-out efforts were being made to rescue them.
In Jurio Themore village, the high tide washed away some seventy goats and belongings of the fishermen.
EDO (revenue) Qazi Jan Mohammad told Dawn that so far 300 affected people had been shifted to vacant school buildings.
He said that food and medicine were being provided to them.
In Kharochhan and Keti Bunder talukas, some 1,100 affected people have been shifted to nine relief camps.
Gates of pakka and katcha drains have been closed by the irrigation and drainage administration to expedite the release of stagnant oceanic water and rainwater into the sea.
Our Badin Correspondent adds: At least 100 people from several villages of the Kadhan union council were shifted to the Kadhan high school and primary girls’ school as their homes were inundated due to a breach in a drain.
The inundated villages are: Ismail Notiar, Hakeem Notiar and Ghafoor Notiar.
Badin DCO Aftab Ahmed Khatri said that no loss of life was reported from any part of the district.
He said that a cut was made in a small drain by some people which had immediately been plugged.
Contact with more than 30 villages could not be established. They are: Gaji Mallah, Haji Hijam, Lakha Dino Rajo, Shaikh Kerio Bhandhari and Golo Mendharo.
He said that action would be taken against the culprits who had made cut.
Mr Khatri said that no official relief camp was set up as the situation did not demand so.
He said that some schools had been reserved to meet any emergency.
He said that medical arrangements were made and more than 600 vials of anti-snake venom were available.
Badin DPO Abdullah Shaikh said that three police control rooms were set up and taluka police officers had been deputed to look after the affairs.
He said that the district police was prepared to handle any situation and would perform their duties diligently.
