HYDERABAD, Aug 6: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has expressed concern over abolition of the Saline Control and Rehabilitation Project (Scarp) of the Sindh irrigation department.

At a meeting held here on Sunday, SCA members said that the government had decided to abolish the Scarp division of the irrigation department which was providing water to farmers through tube-wells. Mir Murad Ali Talpur presided over the meeting.

The meeting said that a large number of Scarp tube-wells had been out of order for many years but no steps had been taken to make them operational.

The meeting adopted a resolution calling upon the Sindh government not to abolish the Scarp division and to take immediate steps for repairs of tube-wells.

The meeting urged the government to complete the construction of Chotiyarioon dam without delay to meet water shortage in Sanghar, Mirpur-khas, Umerkot and Tharparkar districts.

It also criticised the authorities for their failure to provide any relief to rain-affected people of the Badin district.

The meeting said that the district had sustained huge losses due to recent heavy rains and backlash of sea water.
