FAISALABAD, Aug 11: Comprehensive reforms in the police department have not only helped in checking crimes, but also opened new avenues of community policing.

This was stated by inspector general of Punjab police Ziaul Hasan at a ceremony at the police lines after inaugurating Muhafiz Squad here on Friday.

He said the police had been facilitated to improve its performance with a number of incentives. He said Faisalabad was pioneer in community policing, and the local community, particularly businessmen, were cooperating with the police department. “These steps have played an instrumental role in discouraging anti-social elements,” he said.

The IG said the Muhafiz Squad would cement relations between the police and the people in addition to controlling street crime particularly in the urban areas.

He said a central control room, headed by the DPO, would also be set up to monitor the law and order situation besides ensuring police presence at any troubled spot within the shortest possible time.

He said fully competent and able-bodied people had been picked for the Muhafiz Squad on merit. “They will get best training and salary,” he said and hoped in return they had to give best results.

The IG also gave an assurance that a liaison officer would be appointed in Faisalabad to bridge the gap between the police and the press. — APP
