HYDERABAD, Aug 15: Poor sanitary conditions prevailed in various parts of Latifabad taluka due to accumulation of rainwater. Sanitary workers of the taluka municipal administration have virtually turned a blind eye to the plight of people.

The situation is worst in the main vegetable and fruit market where the rainwater was mixed with the stagnant water forcing commission agents to sell fruits and vegetables under highly polluted environment on the Gharib Nawaz bridge.

On Sunday, it rained here heavily flooding main roads and streets with rainwater.

The main thoroughfares presented a view of lakes and vehicles especially motorbike riders were stuck up in the water.

The Latifabad taluka remained worst affected area where till Tuesday evening no sanitation measures had been taken to clear main streets and roads of stagnant water which had become hatchery of insects and mosquitoes.

In some cases the rainwater entered houses after getting mixed with sewerage water.

Areas of E-1, 2, 3 in the Hussaini colony of UC-8, Latifabad taluka are quite deplorable because people have been forced to remain indoors after streets in the areas remained impassable as rainwater was standing outside homes.

“You can see the situation which is quite pathetic for us ever since rains began. Neither the taluka nazim nor UC nazims had visited the area.

A group of inhabitants of the locality went to the UC nazim but he is not available”, said a resident, Mohammad Nadeem while maintaining that all areas were presenting the same situation.

It was told that the UC nazim was on visit to Lahore.

The streets of the areas remained completely closed for people.

The thoroughfare to the Government Degree College is still closed as the road was yet to be constructed.

It was found that the rainwater had accumulated in Block C-2 and B-2 in Latifabad-11 near Jamia Bilal Masjid.

A former UC nazim of the area, Ibrahim Chishti said that “situation was quite difficult for residents and they were confined to their homes as they could not move outside easily”.

Heaps of garbage could not be collected by the TMA Latifabad sanitary workers in Latifabad-5 near Mehboob ground and other spots where the garbage was dumped.

Till Tuesday, the filthy water was standing in UC-4 of Latifabad near the PTCL dispensary and employees colony.

People of the area also complained that rainwater had entered houses and their civic life had been completely paralysed.

Extremely unhygienic conditions prevailed in Sabzi Mandi in the taluka where around 428 shops of fruit and vegetable commission agents are located.

Neither the sanitary staff from the TMA nor from the Market committee had turned up to clear the garbage and drain out rainwater.

“We are sitting under knee-deep water because the nullah is overflowing since Sunday morning.

Vegetable and fruit are being sold in a polluted environment which will certainly expose consumers to different ailments.

None of the government functionary has bothered to visit the site”, said a commission agent while claiming that all commission agents pay taxes to the Market committee for the goods delivered at their shops.
