MIRPURKHAS, Aug 24: Small and large breaches have developed in drains connected with the LBOD in the Mirpurkhas district, leaving thousands of people marooned.

Reports received here on Thursday said that in taluka Jhuddo, near Silor Mori, Sunni Mori, Deh 341, 343-F, and deh 362, three breaches of 50 to 60 feet had developed inundating over 50 villages. Around two to three feet water had accumulated and villagers were sitting in the open on roads and in school buildings.

Army personnel were busy in relief work in talukas Hussain Bux Mari and Sindhri. Devastation of crops attributed to silting in drains or accumulation of soil before rains.

In Kot Ghulam Mohammad taluka, three breaches of over 50 feet each developed in the drains near Degan Rasti, submerging many villages and standing crops. Villagers were shifted to nearby roads and school buildings.

Taluka nazim Kot Ghulam Muhammad Noor Mohammad Bhurgari and LBOD SDO Riaz Ahmed Bhurgari along with villagers were making efforts to plug breaches and evacuating affected villagers to safer places.

Dozens of villages were inundated under saline and irrigation water in taluka Mirpurkhas near Mirpurkhas Sugar Mills after the LBOD drain overflowed, inundating villages Jeevan Khan Lund, Nabi Bux Lund, Bahadur Unnar, Irshad Baig, Choudhry Khushi Mohammed, Dr Riaz Ahmed, Saroop Chand, Ali Akbar Lund, Raham Ali Lund, Juma Khaskheli etc.

Villagers reached main the Umerkot-Mirpurkhas road and took refuge in school buildings.

Heavy rains have destroyed cotton, chilli and other crops.

RELIEF: Rains, which restarted after 24 hours, affected the relief work in the rain affected areas on Thursday. Different towns of Umerkot and Tharparkar districts received rains.

DROWNED: A 10-year-old girl Dhayani drowned in stagnant rainwater in village Chani Khan Jarwar, taluka Digri on Thursday.
