THATTA, Aug 27: The leader of opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Mr Nisar Khuhro, has appealed to the supreme court to take suo motu notice of substandard material being used in the construction of Rs800 million Thatta-Sujawal road.

Talking to Dawn, he said that he would definitely fulfil his national responsibility and raise the issue in the Sindh Assembly.

He said that the engineering company had dismantled the entire 30.75 kilometres long road without maintaining proper diversions, signboards and other facilities for the commuters.

He said that the company was awarded contract for construction of the ADB-funded project initially at a cost of Rs730 million by the provincial works and service department under “Sindh Road Sector Development Programme.

He said that the project was initiated on May 12, 2005 which was to be completed by January 11, 2007.

He said that only about 30 per cent of work had so far been completed.

As a result, major and minor accidents, blockade of vehicular traffic, and severe damages have become a routine on this road.

He said that the ill-planned project unnecessarily includes 97 mainly non-operational culverts within 30 kilometres, besides a new bridge on Daro branch, construction of KB (Kalri Baghar) feeder and rehabilitation of Dooleh Darya Khan bridge on the Indus River which would never become beneficial for the population.
